Intracept Procedure

Intracept® Procedure for Vertebrogentic Pain

Vertebrogenic pain is a specific type of chronic low back pain caused by damage to the vertebral endplates—the tissue that covers the top and bottom of each vertebra and separates it from the spinal disc. Over time, as discs degenerate and endure the stresses of everyday activities, the endplates become damaged, leading to inflammation and vertebrogenic pain. The basivertebral nerve (BVN), located within the vertebrae, carries pain signals from these inflamed endplates to the brain, resulting in ongoing discomfort.

How Do Patients Describe Vertebrogenic Pain?

Although vertebrogenic pain shares similarities with disc-related pain, it is associated with distinctive changes in the endplates visible on routine MRI, known as Modic changes. Patients with vertebrogenic pain often describe aching in the center of the lower back, particularly aggravated by physical activity, sitting for long periods, bending forward, or lifting heavy objects. Many patients who undergo the Intracept® Procedure report significant relief from these symptoms.

How is Vertebrogenic Pain Treated?

The basivertebral nerve (BVN) plays a key role in transmitting pain signals from the damaged endplates to the brain. When the endplates are injured, the BVN increases in sensitivity, amplifying pain. The Intracept® Procedure is a highly effective treatment that targets this nerve. By using a radiofrequency probe, the BVN is heated, effectively disrupting the nerve’s ability to send pain signals to the brain, providing relief from vertebrogenic pain.

How Does the Intracept® Procedure Work?

The Intracept® Procedure is a minimally invasive, same-day outpatient procedure that does not involve implants or significant alterations to the spine’s structure. Performed under anesthesia, the procedure takes about an hour, during which the basivertebral nerve is treated with radiofrequency energy. This FDA-cleared procedure has been proven safe and effective, with studies demonstrating lasting pain relief and improved function for years following treatment.

How Long Does Pain Relief Last After the Intracept® Procedure?

Clinical studies show that most patients experience significant pain reduction and enhanced mobility within three months of the procedure. These improvements have been shown to last for over five years after just a single treatment.

Am I a Candidate for the Intracept® Procedure?

You may be a candidate for the Intracept® Procedure if:

  • You’ve had chronic low back pain for at least six months,
  • You’ve tried conservative treatments without relief,
  • Your MRI shows Modic changes, indicating inflammation and damage to the vertebral endplates.

As with any medical procedure, it’s important to discuss potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider to determine if the Intracept® Procedure is right for you.
