Congenital Spinal Problems
“Congenital” pertains to conditions that are present at birth. Among these are congenital spinal defects, which involve various spinal abnormalities that a person is born with. Some of these include:
- Spina bifida: This occurs when the spinal column fails to fully close while the baby is in the womb, hence the term “split spine.”
- Congenital scoliosis: Here, the spine is twisted or rotated, leading the ribs to form a multi-dimensional curve.
- Lumbarization, sacralization: These are malformations at the base of the spine and the sacrum that affect the normal functioning of the spine.
- Vertebral stenosis: This condition presents as a narrowing of the open spaces within the spine.
- Spondylolisthesis: This is when one vertebra slips over the one beneath it.
- Torticollis: Also known as a twisted neck, this is where the head is tilted to one side while the chin turns to the other.
- Lordosis: This is characterized by an increased curvature of the spine. The term “lordotic curves” pertains to the inward curve of the lumbar spine (just above the buttocks).
Here at Dallas Pain Institute, we offer a range of treatment options for congenital spine abnormalities, the choice of which depends on the specific condition and its severity. For instance, torticollis may be managed with physical therapy aimed at aligning the head properly, while a mild case of lordosis might be treated with exercises to enhance posture. More severe issues, particularly those that might worsen over time, are usually addressed with either braces or surgery, contingent on the degree of the existing curvature and abnormality.
