Degenerative Disc Disease

The spongy, gel-like substances that serve as cushions for each interlinked bone that makes up our spinal column can, under significant pressure, become compressed. When these soft buffers are squeezed and squashed, their capacity to act as shock absorbers for the vertebrae diminishes. As a result, the spine loses its flexibility, becoming incapable of bending, twisting, or stretching.

This scenario represents what happens in the case of degenerative disc disease, a condition more aptly associated with natural aging rather than a specific disease. As we age, it is normal for our spinal discs to undergo changes, but unfortunately, these transformations can be accompanied by discomfort. Those who smoke, engage in heavy lifting, or are obese are at a higher risk of developing this disorder.

The most common symptom of degenerative disc disease is discomfort in the back or neck. However, the intensity of this pain can vary between individuals, potentially worsening when bending, twisting, or stretching the spine. Some individuals diagnosed with this condition may also experience a numbness or tingling sensation in their arms or legs.

The areas most commonly impacted by degenerative disc disease are the lumbar region or lower back, and the cervical region, or neck, leading to pain.

The disease is commonly associated with the following conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis, a condition marked by the degradation of the soft cartilages that serve as a cushion for the joints
  • Herniated disc, which refers to the protrusion of a spinal disc
  • Spinal stenosis, a condition involving the constriction of the spinal canal

Degenerative disc disease is attributed to a decrease in fluid in the spinal discs, causing the discs to become thinner and less flexible. This often results in cracks and minor tears in the disc’s exterior layer, leading to bulging or rupture of the disc.
